Clearwater’s First Half Defeats Scrappy Crusaders

KISSIMMEE, FL – Playing in the confines of Kissimmee, FL, the Maranatha Crusader women’s soccer team kicked off their 2013 NCCAA DII National Championship quest against the tough #2 Clearwater Christian College, taking a 4-0 loss on a clear Thursday evening.

Clearwater set the tone quickly in the first period by scoring back to back goals, both by Rebecca Farrell, eight and nine minutes into the game.

In what would turn out to be a scrappy contest, Clearwater would hold a 10-4 edge in shots in the first period as both teams combined for 25 fouls during the game, with no yellow cards.

Clearwater added goal number three at the 18 minute mark for the 3-0 lead to head into halftime but Maranatha made some adjustments at the break to put solid pressure on Clearwater in the second period. The teams tied with four shots apiece in the second period, but Maranatha was not able to find the back of the net and finished with six corner kicks compared to zero for Clearwater.

Freshman midfielder Courtney Dunn (Oshkosh, WI) finished with a solid performance with three shots, one on goal while sophomore midfielder Harmony Lorch (Aurora, CO) had two shots, one on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michala Marino (Grand Blanc, MI) posted four saves in 90 minutes of action.

Maranatha moves on to face Cairn University at 5:00 p.m. EST on Friday.
