Music Department professor Dr. David Brown regularly updates a special file on his computer.

“The name of the document is, ‘Songs I Would Love to do With my Choir Someday,’ ” Brown said.

In March of 2011, he did.

The Madrigal and Handbell Choir’s CD, There is a Fountain, is now for sale. The 14 songs were recorded by the choir at Aire Born Studios in Zionsville, IN. Brown said the final musical selections were made after searching “a long, long time.” He also said the final product was worth the wait.

Madrigal CD“We wanted to take a step up in terms of quality,” Brown said. “We couldn’t just settle for ‘good enough.’ Every measure, every piece had to be excellent. That choir practiced very hard and now that choir lives on.”

Brown praised the work of Aire Born, which hosted the 45-member Madrigal Choir during its annual spring tour. The studio was able to accommodate the special needs of a large group that would occasionally employ two pianos or handbells.

Many of the songs (see below) came from Brown’s document. Heather Sorenson’s “God of Heaven” was suggested by senior choir member Abigail Call, who heard the song while working at The Wilds Christian Camp in Brevard, NC. Another choir member, Rachel L. Stevens, designed the CD cover.

“God of Heaven really resonated with me because its message is so powerful,” Brown said.

The choir sang each song four or five times during the two days of recording.

“They may have been physically weary, but they were never lacking in spirit,” Brown said. “That choir never lacked for zeal, energy, or enthusiasm. Because of that drive, they were able to produce something that is really special.”
