CHICAGO, IL – The Maranatha baseball team concluded the 2014 regular season with a trip to U.S. Cellular Field, home of the Chicago White Sox, and faced the IIT Scarlet Hawks for the third time this season, taking a 19-7 loss on a sunny day in Chicago, IL.

IIT started off hot with at least four runs in the first two innings, and led by 13-0 after the top of the third, generating 16 hits over three innings, and 26 in the game.

A walk to Caleb Courtney (Guthrie Center, IA) and a single by catcher Jacob Vossen (Port Clinton, OH) set up the team’s first two runs, as both Caleb Courtney and Vossen scored on errors.

In the fifth inning, freshman Andrew Taylor (Chesapeake, VA) reached after being hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a balk, then scored on a single by freshman Caleb Prigge (Watertown, WI), who also reached home on an error.

Singles contributed by Micah Burdett (Newnan, GA) and Cody Borland (Oakley, CA) led to bases loaded in the sixth inning, where two batters scored on walks, and Caleb Courtney recorded a groundout RBI, to give Maranatha its seventh run of the game.

Neither team scored in the final three innings, but Maranatha came close in the eighth, when the team left several batters on base before ending the inning on a fielder’s choice groundout.

Freshman pitcher Adam Courtney (Guthrie Center, IA) pitched two innings in the loss, and four other pitchers logged at least an inning, with junior Caleb Rost (Greenville, S.C.) recording three innings, and striking out three batters.

Burdett finished 2-6 from the plate, while Prigge went 1-2, and Tim Rogers (Willmar, MN) went 1-3. Maranatha finished 4-19 on the season, and retains a talented young core for the 2015 season.
