Crusader Baseball Falls Late to Edgewood

VERONA, WI – Playing in a single 9-inning game, the Edgewood Eagles defeated the Maranatha baseball team, 12-2, pulling away in a five-run fourth inning.

Maranatha equaled Edgewood in hits (7), but failed to push runs across home plate, coming close in the first and fourth innings.

Freshman second baseman Caleb Prigge (Watertown, WI) single in the game’s first at-bat and advanced to third before a pop out to end the inning, but Maranatha nearly converted on a golden opportunity in the fourth inning.

After a double by sophomore shortstop Tim Rogers (Willmar, MN) to open the inning, senior Galen Balinski (Mountainhome, PA) singled pushing Rogers around third base, before Edgewood’s left fielder threw Rogers out at home plate.

Edgewood held just a 2-0 lead through the first three innings, but used a three-hit fourth to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the fifth for an 8-0 advantage, and Maranatha added their two runs in the sixth inning.

Rogers (2-3), singled in the sixth, and scored on an RBI single by freshman third baseman Adam Courtney (Guthrie Center, IA), and Maranatha added another run off an error, in their last inning.

Prigge went 2-4, while Courtney, Balinski and freshman outfielder Micah Burdett (Newnan, GA), each went 1-3 from the plate.

Junior pitcher Caleb Rost (Greenville, S.C.) pitched five innings in the loss, allowing just six hits, and striking out three batters.
