HANCOCK, MI – The Finlandia University Lions became the latest victims of Maranatha’s recent win streak, which has now stretched to six straight with a 3-0 sweep, by scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-13 on Saturday afternoon in Hancock, MI.
Maranatha’s 20th overall win came against a team it faced last Saturday, at home, where the Crusaders handed Finlandia a similar three-set sweep.
Senior middle blocker Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, IL) gave Maranatha a 9-4 lead on a service ace to force a Finlandia timeout in the opening set. The Lions crept back into the match, however, with a 10-8 deficit but would commit a number of errors that led to a 15-7 Maranatha run that culminated in a set one win.
Both teams battled to a 9-9 tie in the second set with Maranatha grabbing a 12-9 lead to force another Lion’s timeout.
Finlandia once again found themselves within a point of the Crusaders on a kill by Emma Cole but Maranatha blitzed the Lions with six straight points, forcing Finlandia to take their second timeout of the set. Maranatha received kills from Peterson during that stretch, and Maranatha easily won their 17th straight set.
The Crusaders made it 18 straight when a kill by Erin Steuerwald (Whitewater, WI), ignited an 11-4 run; as the senior hitter, along with freshman opposite hitter Alison Renz (Lake Mills, WI), teamed up to deliver the last two points and a third-set win.
Peterson finished with 10 kills on a .261 attack percentage while Renz had five kills and a .444 attack percentage. Senior middle blocker Lauren Schulz (Lake Mills, WI) had six kills, and three block assists.
On offense, the team spread out 30 assists among 10 different players while the defense was led by sophomore libero Sam Swiatek (Walled Lake, MI), who amassed 15 digs.
The volleyball team returns to the court on Tuesday, October 29 for a home matchup against the Marian Sabres (NACC) at 7:00 p.m.
