LISLE, Ill. – Benedictine cruised to a doubleheader sweep over the baseball team, winning 16-1 and 8-2 on Monday afternoon.
The Eagles scored early and often in game one, posting seven runs on seven hits in the second inning. Benedictine outhit Maranatha 18-3 in game one.
The Crusaders’ run came in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore outfielder Jeremy Mattson’s bases-loaded walk advanced senior catcher Andrew Timblin home.
Juniors Garett Ordway (Pensacola, Fla.) and Nathan Lyle (Oregon, Wis.) each had a hit apiece, while Joel Borchardt (Watertown, Wis.) pitched two innings for the loss.
Trailing 3-0 in game two, Maranatha pulled to within one in the fourth inning with several big hits from sophomore Tim Shelp (Independence, Mo.) and Mattson to start the inning.
Junior pitcher Derek Funkhouser (Paris, Ill.) pitched three innings, allowing four hits and three runs for the loss.
Funkhouser was relieved by Lyle, who pitched five innings, allowing nine hits, five runs while striking out three.
The Crusaders face Marian University on Friday, April 13 at 3:00 p.m. in Fond du Lac, Wis.
