DUBUQUE, IA – Maranatha’s four-game win streak was abruptly interrupted on Saturday, with a 92-61 defeat at the hands of the Clarke University Crusaders, to bring Maranatha’s record to 11-14 for the 2013-14 regular season.
Maranatha had their hands full with a potent Clarke team that bolted out to a 8-0 lead in the first two minutes, and had 13 first-half points from Tre Wagner (Loves Park, IL) and a team shooting percentage of 52.9% from the field.
Maranatha converted just 27% of their shots from the field, and went 3-16 from three-point range in the first half, going into the locker room with a 46-26 deficit.
Clarke watched their 20-point lead evaporate into 10, courtesy of a three by freshman guard Brady Moses (Lodi, WI), and finally a layup by junior center Brett Cashner (Urbana, IL), after an offensive rebound by freshman Zach Terpstra (Baron, WI).
But two minutes later, Clarke’s lead had jumped back up to 20 on several three’s and a pair of free throws, and shortly afterwards, the lead ballooned up to 31 points, before the team closed out with a pair of free throws to stop Maranatha’s four game win streak that included wins over Lincoln Christian, and Grace Bible.
Freshman guard Brady Moses (Lodi, WI) finished with 12 points on 5-12 shooting, with two steals, and two rebounds.
Maranatha retains the #2 seed headed into the NCCAA DII Midwest Regional Tournament next weekend, beginning with a rematch against Moody at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 27.
