WATERTOWN, Wis. – Maranatha succumbed to the #3 team in the NAC, Concordia Chicago, by scores of 18-1 and 11-1, each in seven innings on Saturday afternoon.
Maranatha trailed the Cougars 3-1 in the second inning before Concordia pounded out five runs in the fourth and six runs in the fifth.
Junior shortstop Joel Borchardt (Watertown, Wis.) doubled in the second inning before scoring Maranatha’s lone run on an error by the catcher.
Sophomore pitcher Chris Von Holt (0-2) recorded the loss after pitching four innings while allowing 12 hits and 11 runs.
Sophomore outfielder Jeremy Mattson (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) went 2-4 from the plate.
In game two, Derek Funkhouser (Paris, Ill.) held Concordia to three runs through four innings, and allowed Maranatha to tie the game at one apiece in the third inning.
The Cougars brushed off Maranatha’s advance, by pouring in six runs on four hits in the sixth inning to clinch the win.
Funkhouser pitched seven innings, allowing 10 hits and 11 runs.
Junior infielder Garett Ordway (Pensacola, Fla.) was 2-3 from the plate with an RBI.
Maranatha moves on to face Benedictine on Monday, April 9 at 2:00 p.m. in Lisle, Ill.
