WATERTOWN, Wis. – The men’s basketball team was fueled by a raucous gymnasium, defeating the Northland Pioneers 70-57 on Tuesday night.
The Crusaders jumped out to an early 13-1, thanks in large part to junior forward Joel Borchardt (Watertown, Wis.), who shot 4-5 from the field for 10 points in the first half.
Junior guard Matt Hunter (Pontiac, Ill.) also had 10 points in the first half to lead the Crusaders to a 37-15 halftime lead.
The Pioneers put together a ferocious comeback, cutting a 24-point deficit to 58-48 with 4:42 left in the game, before two clutch three’s by Hunter and junior guard Matt McGivern (Milwaukee, Wis.) put the game out of reach.
Hunter finished 6-12 from the field for 17 points, while sophomore center Brett Cashner (Urbana, Ill.) notched 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Coach Ring stated,
“It was a great team victory with a lot of contributions from a lot of players. I thought we set the tone defensively and withstood their run in the second half. It was a great crowd and we were able to feed off of their energy.”
The Crusaders will host Edgewood on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
