RIVER FOREST, IL – The baseball team opened up NCAA DIII play, with a match against Dominican University (9-7), falling 16-3 in game one, and 5-1 in the second of a doubleheader.
Freshman pitcher Greg Scheiderer pitched four innings in game one, and struck out four batters while allowing seven earned runs in the first game, and Maranatha jumped into an early 2-0 lead, when freshman infielder Caleb Prigge (Watertown, WI) scored on a groundout RBI by Caleb Rost (Greenville, S.C.). Prigge finished the game, 3-3 from the plate and a run scored.
Cody Borland (Oakley, CA) also scored on a single RBI by Micah Burdett (Newnan, GA), and Maranatha’s lead held for three innings before the Stars unleashed a seven-run inning in the bottom of the fourth, and seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Dominican forced Scheiderer to toss 94 pitches in a four-inning span, before the first-year player was relieved by Rost.
Maranatha closed out the game with a groundout RBI by Borland, his second of the game, to give Maranatha their third run, off two hits in the inning.
Freshman Caleb Courtney (Guthrie Center, IA) led the charge in game two and pitched six solid innings, at one time holding Dominican to a 3-1 lead, while allowing just eight hits and two earned runs.
After Prigge reached home on a fielder’s choice by Burdett, Courtney held the Stars to two hits, and one run in three innings before Dominican put up their fifth run on a single RBI in the sixth inning.
Borland led Maranatha, going 1-2 in game two.
The Crusaders resume NCCAA play with a match against Lincoln Christian, on Wednesday, at 12:30 p.m., in Watertown, WI.
