RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Four Crusaders scored in double-digits, and junior center Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, Ill.) continued her dominance on defense with nine blocks in a 70-55 win over the Dominican University Stars on Saturday afternoon.
Maranatha ‘s distribution on offense led to a big 15-0 lead over Dominican in the first seven minutes of the game, and shot 78% from the free-throw line.
Dominican hit enough jumpers, and shot 80% from the free throw line to slowly cut the deficit to 35-27 at halftime. The Stars came out a different team in the second period, holding the Crusaders to single-digit leads until the last five minutes of the game.
Down 37-27, Dominican used a 22-15 run to cut the lead to three with eight minutes left, but consecutive jumpers by senior guard Kristin Morrison (Jefferson, Wis.) gave Maranatha a seven-point cushion.
Dominican failed to score for the next five minutes as the Crusaders built too large a deficit to overcome, improving to 8-3 overall and 5-3 in the NAC.
For Peterson, Saturday marked the fourth straight game with at least six blocks, as the junior center finished with 15 points and six rebounds.
Morrison also had a standout performance with 14 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals in 39 minutes.
The Crusaders return to Watertown on Monday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. to host MSOE.
