MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Maranatha made strides on Saturday against MSOE, pushing the Raiders to nine innings in a 14-9 game one loss and losing 9-1 in game two.
Down 6-0 in the third inning, Chris Von Holt (Stony Point, N.Y.) came up big with his first homer of the season, driving in three runs in part of a five-run inning to bring the Crusaders to 6-5.
Maranatha had five hits in the third; including a big double RBI by junior shortstop Joel Borchardt (Watertown, Wis.) to score Jason Garrison.
MSOE put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning, leading 14-6.
The home-run derby wasn’t finished with a three-run shot by Borchardt in the eighth inning to draw Maranatha to within 14-9, but not enough to steal a victory.
The team had 12 hits in the game as Borchardt’s monster performance included going 2-4 with five RBI’s.
Von Holt finished 2-5 with three RBI’s.
Junior pitcher Craig Lawson (Independence, Mo.) pitched two innings for the loss.
Maranatha fizzled in game two, waiting until the fourth inning to post a run on a wild pitch.
MSOE tallied 10 hits in the game and chased sophomore pitcher Jeremy Mattson (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) after three innings. Mattson struck out three, while allowing five hits and seven earned runs.
Borchardt continued his tear in game two, going 3-4 at the plate.
Maranatha faces Rockford on Monday, April 23 at 3:00 p.m. in Watertown, Wis.
