GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The first game of the season can often be a time to shake off the rust, but the Crusaders saw it a little differently, posting a 3-1 victory over Grace Bible on Friday afternoon.
The team opened up the game with a goal from Michael Bagin (Richfield, Wis.) in the 10th minute. Grace responded with a goal at the 32nd minute of the game, but Maranatha’s firepower boasted a 26-12 shots advantage to overwhelm the Tigers.
Freshman Mitchell Mellano (Lima, Ohio) scored in the 57th minute for his first collegiate goal and junior Brian Lundquist (Reading, Mass.) added a goal in the 60th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Tyler Holley (Watertown, Wis.) stood strong in net with eight saves and freshman Marvin Klaudt (Los Mochis, Mexico) was given the team award, “Man of the Match.”
Coach Pill stated, “We had times where we possessed the ball very well at the midfield and our defense was solid. A lot of people contributed from different positions. At times we lacked patience, but in general it was a very good first outing.”
The Crusaders continue their road trip with a game against Great Lakes on Saturday at 1:00 EST in Lansing, Mich.
