Crusaders Split Doubleheader With Lincoln

LINCOLN, Ill. – The baseball team began their season on Friday against Lincoln Christian, losing the first game 4-3 before thrashing LCU 18-7 in game two.

In game one, Maranatha held a 3-1 edge headed into the fifth inning before Lincoln notched two runs to tie. The game remained deadlocked until LCU scored a run in the ninth inning to seal the win.

Junior Jason Garrison (Watertown, Wis.) notched two hits and two RBI’s for the Crusaders while sophomore Tim Shelp (Independence, Mo.) pitched eight innings while striking out eleven for a 1.75 ERA.

In game two, Maranatha trailed LCU 5-0 before putting together a 13-run fourth inning.

Junior infielder Garett Ordway (Pensacola, Fla.) had a perfect day at the plate, with five hits while transfer Chris Von Holt (Stony Point, N.Y.) raked in four hits as well.

Junior Derek Funkhouser (Paris, Ill.) hit a home run and had three hits and four RBI’s.

Junior pitcher Joel Borchardt (Watertown, Wis.) 5.3 innings whiles striking out six batters.

The Crusaders play Tennessee Temple on Monday, March 19 at 1:00 EST.
