KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Maranatha Crusaders endured overtime, then won a shootout 3-1, to claim a 3-2 victory over #3 Kentucky Christian on Saturday afternoon for 5th place in NCCAAII.
Kentucky put points on the board first on a goal by Kymmy Owens, but sophomore forward Taylor Thompson evened the game at one apiece off a rebounded shot from Allison Steinhaus (Winston Salem, N.C.) at the 55 minute mark.
Maranatha gained control of the game on a goal by senior forward Melissa Kaminski (Eugene, Ore.) at 69 minutes.
Kentucky refused to go away though, tying the game once again with only seven minutes left to play, and had a chance to win on a penalty kick at the end of the game, but KCU’s Dorsey missed the shot, sending the game into overtime.
In the shootout, KCU missed their first four attempts, while Maranatha made their first two on goals from Alysha Morris (Watertown, Wis.), and Merriellen Stevens (Watertown, Wis.).
KCU added their first goal, but it was freshman defender Kaitlyn Rygh’s goal that sealed the 3-2 win for Maranatha and fifth place in the nation.
Freshman goalkeeper Michala Marino (Grand Blanc, Mich.) made five saves in the win for Maranatha as the team finished the season 9-14, and 6-3 in the NCCAAII.
