WATERTOWN, WI – Playing in their third home game of the season, and winning their fourth straight, the volleyball team powered through yet another opponent, this time, the Finlandia University Lions, who were tamed by scores of 25-11, 25-8 and 25-12 in an effortless three-game sweep on Saturday afternoon.
Maranatha spread out 32 kills among 10 different players, with senior middle blocker Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, IL) leading the way with eight kills on a .889 attack percentage. Peterson was joined by sophomore hitter Stacy Reinke (Clintonville, WI), who notched six kills while chipping in four service aces and a block assist.
In the opening set, Maranatha shook off some early rust after a 4-4 tie, to build a 10-7 lead and before momentum swung in their favor with a 15-4 run that ended with a kill by freshman opposite hitter Alison Renz (Lake Mills, WI) for the 25-11 win.
The second set started off in similar fashion before Maranatha turned on the after-burners with a 19-4 run, after a 6-4 lead that gave the home team their 11th straight set win, a 25-8 pounding.
The third and final set started with an 8-2 opening run by Maranatha that forced a Finlandia timeout, a deficit the Lions would never recover from, before succumbing to a 25-12 defeat.
Maranatha’s defense, led by middle blocker Lauren Schulz (Lake Mills, WI), put on a clinic, as the 5-10 senior posted six blocks (one solo) while the team finished with 32 digs spread out among 13 Crusaders.
Everyone logged minutes in the team’s fourth straight win and tenth in the last eleven games as the Crusaders improved to 18-8 overall.
Maranatha hopes to extend their winning streak with a matchup against Mount Mary at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22 in Milwaukee, WI.
