VERONA, Wis. – The Maranatha Crusaders nearly pulled off a win against Edgewood in game one, and were defeated by just one run in each competition on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior left fielder Autumn Peotter (Waupaca, Wis.) keyed things off with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a steal and on to third base on a passed ball.
Sophomore outfielder Emily Thompson (Watertown, Wis.) also got on base due to a fielder’s choice, but the next two batters struck out, putting freshman second baseman Emily Boogher (York, Pa.) up to bat.
Boogher came through in the clutch with a single, and two RBI’s, scoring both Peotter and Thompson before the inning ended.
The Eagles followed up with a one-run inning in the bottom of the first and the rest of the game was left to a Crusader defense that halted rallies in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the sixth, Edgewood advanced to third before freshman pitcher Hannah Clement (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) forced the batter into a groundout to end the inning.
The Eagles, though, finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh, when the team scored two runs off a single and an error to eke out a 3-2 win.
Clement pitched 6.2 innings for the loss, striking out one and allowing just three runs, one unearned.
Game two started with Edgewood on top, 1-0 after the bottom of the first inning.
Maranatha responded though, with two runs in the top of the second when Boogher double, followed by a single RBI by senior third baseman Susie Prusak (Leesburg, Va.). Freshman Kaitlyn Rygh (Grayson, Ga.) also got in on the action with a double RBI, and the team grabbed a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles, not content to stand pat, regained a 4-2 lead after the third inning. Maranatha clawed its way to within one in the top of the fourth when Boogher, who had her second double of the game, scored on a groundout by Prusak.
The lead would remain the same, as Maranatha was held to two hits over the final three innings. Sophomore pitcher Jana Dempsey (Bath, Mich.) pitched six innings, striking out two, while allowing just three hits, and four runs, two unearned.
The team travels to Alverno on Thursday to face the Inferno at 3:30 p.m. in a makeup game from last Friday, April 12.
