Football Team Earns Huge Win

NEW ULM, Minn. – The Crusaders football team picked up right where they left off last season with a huge 26-12 win against Martin Luther College. Maranatha is serious about rebounding this year and stamped a huge exclamation point on this win.

The past few seasons have been harsh on the Crusaders football team as numbers have been scarce and competition has been tough to match. Now the Crusaders have started to establish a building block of success under new head coach, Andy Peterson.

The Crusaders went up 7-0 on a 40-yard pass from senior quarterback Phil Littrell (Valrico, Fla.) to receiver Josiah Brendemuehl (Mischicot, Wis.). The scoring continued as Littrell tossed another touchdown pass for 20 yards to top receiver, Logan Beer (Atlanta, Ga.) to up the score 13-0.

The defense got involved in the scoring as well, as senior defensive end Ethan Rosen (New Munich, Minn.) recovered a fumble and took it 55 yards for a touchdown.

The Crusader defense held Martin Luther scoreless until the third quarter, when Tyler Dorn scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 20-6.

Littrell connected with Beer one more time on a nice 44-yard touchdown pass at 4:03 seconds in the third quarter.

The Crusaders outgained Martin Luther in passing yards as they averaged 16.8 yards per completion. Those numbers were representative of the improvement of Phil Littrell, as he finished off the day with 168 yards passing and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

Logan Beer received 105 of those yards and scored two touchdowns and Brendemuehl had 63 yards receiving on two catches for one touchdown.

The defense was stellar as well with Brendemuehl leading the group with 16 total tackles. Matt Morrison (Jefferson, Wis.) had three interceptions and senior linebacker Rob Kohlhaus (Marion, Mich.) had two out of the three forced fumbles for Maranatha.

The Crusaders have to be excited for the success on both sides of the ball and hope to carry the momentum into next week’s game.

The Crusaders will play Crown College at home on September 10 at 1:00 p.m.
