WATERTOWN, WI – The softball team grabbed their second win of the season, in a 12-7 win over Mount Mary on Saturday, and ended the day, splitting the doubleheader, with a 14-5 loss in game two.
The Crusaders exploded for a whopping, 21 hits in game one, and held Mount Mary to just seven hits, behind the arm of senior pitcher Rosa Lewis (Yates City, IL), who pitched seven complete innings, and struck out seven batters.
Lewis and sophomore catcher Sam Swiatek (Walled Lake, MI) were the offensive catalysts in game one, with a pair of singles in the first inning that gave their team a 3-0 lead.
Swiatek teamed up with sophomore shortstop Emily Boogher (York, PA) teamed up for two more RBI singles to extend Maranatha’s lead by two, and Maranatha owned a comfortable 5-0 advantage in the second. But over the next few innings, the Blue Angels scored six runs, including a two-run home run, to grab a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning, needing just four hits to do so.
The Crusaders regained control of the game with two runs in the fourth, courtesy of single RBI’s by Emily Hinsenkamp (Harrison Twp., MI), and Grace VanDeLinde (Milanville, PA) and pulled away in the fifth and sixth with two, and three runs respectively.
Swiatek finished 4-5, while Lewis was 2-5 with three RBI’s, and outfielders Kelli Fox (Matthews, N.C.), and Emily Thompson (Watertown, WI) each had a 3-5 performance from the plate.
Both teams fought for the lead in the early parts of game two, with Maranatha snagging a 3-2 edge in the first, on three hits.
Mount Mary followed up though, with a big third inning, scoring seven runs off three hits, and added two in the fourth, and three in the fifth to finish out the game.
Lewis went 2-3 with two more RBI’s, while Swiatek went 1-2, and pitched five complete innings for the loss.
Maranatha returns home on Tuesday, April 15, at 3:00 p.m., to face the MSOE Raiders, at Brandt Quirk Park.
