WATERTOWN, WI—The Maranatha men’s basketball team battled hard through forty minutes of regulation and five minutes of extra time against the Lakers of Silver Lake College Thursday night, and yet dropped their eighth straight game and fourth at home, 50-56.

The Maranatha faithful turned out in droves Thursday evening to support the Crusaders in search of their first home win of the season, and yet the athleticism and cool free throw shooting of the Lakers was too much for Maranatha to overcome.

Both teams began at a rather frenetic, flustered pace, as the score was merely 10-13 in favor of the Lakers after the first ten minutes of action. Silver Lake finally began to get their legs under them, however, as freshman forward Darius Barnes (Milwaukee, WI) scored six quick points to propel the Lakers to an 8-0 run. Barnes would finish as the high man for either team, notching 20 points to go along with 17 rebounds.

Maranatha’s woes would continue for the rest of the first half, as the Crusaders scored just one basket in the remaining eight minutes of first half action, and went into the break trailing 15-30.

After shooting a dismal 20% from the field in the first, Maranatha came out energized to begin the second half, as freshman Brady Moses (Lodi, WI) led the charge with 7 quick points to decrease the lead to 24-35.

Maranatha would slowly chip away at the lead for the next twelve minutes of action, going on a drawn-out 11-2 run to whittle the lead to only 3 points at 39-42. Both teams would go back and forth for the remaining eight minutes, with Silver Lake attempting to hold the lead by running down the shot clock on each offensive possession.

This strategy proved to be futile against the inspired Crusaders, however, as freshman guard Clayton Morrison (Jefferson, WI) connected on a jumper to bring the score to 45-47 in favor of the Lakers with under two minutes remaining.

After several offensive rebounds and three missed layups by the Lakers, freshman Brady Moses drove the lane and was able to connect on the finish to tie the game at 47 apiece. Back to back turnovers by both teams sent the match to overtime, with neither team able to get a clean look at the basket.

In the extra period, Laker junior John Duke went off for five straight points, giving Silver Lake the 52-47 lead with only 1:37 remaining. Maranatha finally found the basket with a three pointer by Brady Moses with 30 seconds remaining, but it was too little-too late as the Lakers went 4-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal their fifth victory of the season by the score of 56-50.

Maranatha was once again led by freshman Brady Moses with 19 points and 5 rebounds, while junior Brett Cashner (Urbana, IL) recorded a near double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds. The Crusaders will look to snap their present losing skid with their next match-up this Saturday, as they travel to River Forest, Illinois, on Jan 16th to battle the Stars of Dominican University at 2 p.m.
