Muskie’s Defense Defeats Crusaders

WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Crusaders could not force overtime against Lakeland this time, losing 61-54 on Tuesday evening. In an earlier meeting this season, Lakeland outlasted Maranatha in OT, winning 75-68.

Defense defined this game, as the score remained 9-5 after seven minutes of play in favor of the Muskies.

Lakeland extended their lead to 22-14 with only six minutes remaining in the second period, but Maranatha used a 9-2 run to cut the lead to just two as the first half expired. The teams headed to their locker rooms with the score, 27-25.

Junior Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, Ill), after going 1-9 in the first half, drove hard to the basket, tying the game at 27 apiece on Maranatha’s first basket of the half. Peterson, the only Crusader to finish in double-digits, recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Maranatha took the lead with two minutes left in the third quarter, at 37-36. However, the Muskies continued their physical defense, forcing an eight-point lead over the ‘Saders with five minutes remaining in the game.

The Crusaders’ rallied to a 55-51 deficit, but with just 35 seconds on the clock, fell shy of a victory.

The Crusaders hope for a win this Thursday night against Northern Athletics Conference opponent, Alverno College at 5:00 p.m.
