MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Lakeland Muskies cruised to a doubleheader victory with wins of 8-1 and 16-3 on Friday afternoon, in a game that was originally to be held in Watertown, but was moved to Alverno College due to poor field conditions.
The Muskies opened game one with three runs in the first inning and carried a 6-0 lead entering the fourth when freshman pitcher Hannah Clement (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) doubled and Hannah Flatt (Janesville, Wis.) drove her in for a sacrifice RBI.
After a scoreless fifth, Lakeland tacked on the final two runs in the sixth while holding Maranatha to three hits in the game.
In her first Northern Athletic Conference match, Clement went seven innings, striking out three and allowing five earned runs.
In game two, Maranatha evened it at one apiece in the bottom of the first as senior left fielder Autumn Peotter (Waupaca, Wis.) singled, then scored on a passed ball.
Lakeland took back the lead in the next inning and had a six-run third to put the game out of reach.
Maranatha did record six hits, three of which came in the fifth inning off the bats of freshman catcher Kaitlyn Rygh (Grayson, Ga.) and Clement, whose single drove in Rygh.
Sophomore pitcher Jana Dempsey (Bath, Mich.) recorded the loss after pitching five innings and striking out four.
Maranatha moves on to face Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday, beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Milwaukee. The game was also moved to a different location due to field conditions.
