WATERTOWN, WI – Maranatha alumni and tri-sport athlete, Torey DeLozier, who now serves as the assistant volleyball coach while pursuing graduate work in education at Cedarville University, was recently honored on October 20th by the NCAA for her Top-30 nomination for NCAA Woman of the Year, which covers Divisions I, II and III.
The evening ceremonies were held at the JW Marriott, in Indianapolis, IN, where DeLozier, along with 29 other highly distinguished student-athletes, including the winner, Ifeatu Okafor (Div. I, Big 12 Conference), a Texas Tech University graduate, were commemorated for their academic, athletic and service achievements.
DeLozier (Torey) remarked,
“The awards ceremony weekend was such a great experience. Getting to know the other girls and hearing their stories was a very neat opportunity. Everyone felt humbled and honored to be recognized as a nominee for this award and being in the same boat as everyone else made the experience so much better.”
DeLozier has achieved All-American status in both the NCAAIII as well as the NCCAAII, and was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Woman of the Year during the 2012-13 academic school year.
“Not only did we participate in the ceremonies and social events, we were able to interact with different girls’ clubs in the area. We met at the NCAA headquarters, planted flowers in the Woman of the Year Legacy Garden with the girls, and walked through the Hall of Champions museum at the headquarters. The little girls were so excited to be with all of us and said they didn’t want to leave and wanted us to come back next year. That was a neat opportunity we had to make an impact on those girls’ lives. But overall, I was grateful for the opportunity to represent Maranatha and Christ at the event,” DeLozier stated.
Athletic Director, Rob Thompson, who coached DeLozier in softball, reflected on both the accomplishments, as well as personal ministry of Torey, stating,
“It was an honor and privilege to attend the banquet with Torey and her family, and to witness her receiving the Top-30 award. Torey has been a wonderful example of the mission of Maranatha and our athletic department in developing student-athletes for leadership. As a three-sport athlete who has excelled in her sports, as an Academic All-American excelling in the classroom, as a team and campus officer excelling in leadership, Torey has demonstrated a unique blend of athleticism, academic acuity and humility that any coach or organization would be proud of. As one of her coaches, Athletic Director, and family friend, it has been a pleasure and honor to watch her grow as a young woman. We congratulate Torey on her milestone achievement!”
