ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford Regents had to use overtime to shake the pesky Crusaders on Saturday afternoon, winning 88-78.
The Crusaders carried a 10-point lead at one point on a three by junior guard Matt Hunter (Pontiac, Ill.), but Rockford tied the game on three different occasions in the first half, the last coming at 30-30 before the teams broke for a 36-30 lead in favor of the Regents.
After letting the Regents build an 11-point lead in the opening minute of the second period, sophomore guard Tanner Moses (Lodi, Wis.) hit a three for a 45-44 deficit.
The game remained tight throughout the rest of the period, but the Regents still held a two-point lead with just under a minute and a half in the game.
After a missed jumper by senior guard Matthew McGivern (Milwaukee, Wis.), Rockford turned the ball over with 27 seconds on the clock and Hunter delivered the heroics with a jumper for the fifth tie of a game that would stand 69-69 headed into overtime.
Several missed shots in the opening minutes of the third period gave way to a 76-71 lead in favor of Rockford, who used their 13-15 shooting from the free-throw line to squelch any Maranatha comeback.
Maranatha shot 41% in the game, receiving yet another double-double from Joel Borchardt (Watertown, Wis.), who finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds.
McGivern also played well, shooting 6-14 from the field for 15 points along with nine assists.
The team will face Marian in Fond du Lac, Wis. on Tuesday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m.
