GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Maranatha needed the final minutes of Thursday’s match against #5 Great Lakes to win 84-80, advancing to the semifinal round of the NCCAAII Midwest Regional Tournament in a rematch against #1 Northland International.
Maranatha defeated Great Lakes, 75-73 in overtime at the beginning of the season and now face rival, Northland International, a team they lost to, 73-65 last Thursday evening.
Great Lakes went on a three-point tear near the close of the game to make things interesting but the Crusaders had all five starters in double figures and sent Great Lakes home early.
Senior guard Matt Hunter (Pontiac, Ill.) recorded 17 points, while senior forward Joel Borchardt (Watertown, Wis.) posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Tanner Moses had 16 points, Brett Cashner 15 and Matthew McGivern notched 11 to advance to 4-4 against NCCAAII teams this season.
Head coach Keith Salscheider stated, “I thought our guys played a very balanced approach. Give credit to Great Lakes because they were down by 15-20 points and hit 3-4 three’s with several minutes left. But, we kept our poise and attacked the full-court press to pull out the win. I’m looking forward to playing the #2 team in the nation in Northland tomorrow.”
