PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Maranatha closed out the North Central Tournament with losses to North Central, Presentation and Martin Luther, but received standout performances from several freshmen.
In a rematch against NCU, the Rams defeated Maranatha 6-4 in seven innings after Maranatha won 9-8 in extra-innings on Thursday.
After spotting the Rams a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Crusaders took a 2-1 lead on an error by North Central, and in the top of the third, increased it to 3-1 on a homer by freshman second-baseman Emily Boogher (York, Pa.).
The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice bunt and single, then took a two-run lead over the next two innings before Maranatha scored its last run on a single by freshman Kaitlyn Rygh (Grayson, Ga.).
Freshman Hannah Clement (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) pitched six innings, striking out eight while allowing six earned runs.
In their second game, Maranatha was tied 7-7 in the sixth inning before Presentation went on a six-run outburst, eventually pulling out a 13-9 win.
A called game due to time constraints on Thursday against Martin Luther forced the Crusaders to finish the game on Friday at the originally scheduled 12:45 p.m. game against the same team.
Maranatha ended with a 10-6 loss and had the second game called– also due to time constraints, against Martin Luther after being down, 4-0.
