RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Dominican Stars came from behind to snatch a 65-64 win over the Crusaders in a NAC Challenge game on Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders held a slim margin for the first half, scoring 18 points in the paint thanks to junior forward Joel Borchardt (Watertown, Wis.) and freshman center Brett Cashner (Urbana, Ill.).
Borchardt notched 11 points and six rebounds in the first half alone on 5-7 shooting, while Cashner chipped in eight points, guiding the Crusaders to a 34-34 tie at the half.
In the second period, Brett Cashner went to the free-throw line, making both his shots to give the Crusaders their largest lead of the game, at 51-40.
The Stars chipped away at the lead until tying the game at 54 all on a jumper by Darrius Nelson at 7:56 left in the game.
Borchardt gave Maranatha its last lead of the game at 59-56, before DeAnthony Moore and Kyle Sherwin hit consecutive three’s to swing the lead in their favor, 62-59.
Cashner’s free throw shots drew the Crusaders to within one, but Dominican’s Logan Harris sealed Maranatha’s fate on a layup.
Cashner finished a perfect 5-5 from the line and had 17 points and four rebounds, while Borchardt led the team with 19 points, 13 rebounds and a block.
Maranatha moves on to the NCCAA Midwest Regionals, February 23-25 at Northland International.
