BELOIT, WI – On a sunny, but chilly Thursday afternoon, the women’s soccer team needed just one goal to beat the Beloit Buccaneers, 1-0, thoroughly controlling play during the game to improve to 8-6 this season.
Freshman midfielder Courtney Dunn (Oshkosh, WI) proved to be the catalyst for the team with eight shots, while freshman forward Natascha Vinz (Cheboygan, MI) continued her scoring barrage with her 16th goal of the year at the 34th minute, with the assist from junior midfielder Harmony Lorch (Aurora, CO).
Dunn opened the game with three shots in the opening 20 minutes in a game that saw Maranatha hold a 22-9 advantage in shots, 10 coming in the first period for the Crusaders. At one point, the Crusaders posted six shots in 20 minutes, before Vinz gave Maranatha the game-winning goal before the half.
The pace ratcheted up in the second period with a Crusader assault that included nine shots in just 11 minutes, and this time, the team pestered Beloit’s keeper with 12 shots, eight on goal.
Dunn had three of her four shots in the second half on goal and is currently third on the team in points (11), on three goals and 5 assists while six different players on the team finished with at least two shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Michala Marino (Grand Blanc, MI) improved to 8-6 with her sixth shutout of the year as the Crusaders look forward to a matchup against Lawrence University on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. for Parent’s Day.
