MADISON, WI – The volleyball team made Edgewood work for every point in the first set before falling 3-0 on Tuesday night after having beat the CUW Falcons, 3-2.
Maranatha built a comfortable 8-4 lead that forced an Edgewood timeout after several Eagles’ errors.
Maranatha maintained a consistent lead in the following minutes with several kills from senior middle blocker Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, IL) and carried a six-point differential at 18-12.
The Eagles charged back with kills from Jordan Winkler and Katie Wedvick, and from that point on, no team held more than a one-point lead. As soon as either team scored, the opponent responded by tying it up.
A ball handling error by Edgewood gave Maranatha a 25-24 lead at one point, but Edgewood tied it with a kill by Winkler. The Crusaders took the lead again at 27-26 with a service ace by sophomore libero Samatha Swiatek (Walled Lake, MI), but Edgewood delivered the final blow with two straight kills to end the set at 31-29.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelli Fox (Matthew, N.C.) finished the set with six kills while Peterson notched five.
Edgewood took set two after building a 20-10 lead that resulted in a 25-16 win, and in the third set, carried a 9-5 edge that forced a Maranatha timeout.
Three kills by Peterson and several Edgewood errors cut the deficit to one for the Crusaders, but Edgewood finished off the final set, 25-19 on a kill by Jordan Winkler.
Peterson accumulated 13 kills, and 14 digs while Fox finished the match with 10 kills and 13 digs.
The Crusaders face Mount Mary for a “white-out” at home on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m.
