MILWAUKEE, WI – Maranatha beat Marian University on Saturday afternoon to improve to 9-1 on the season.
In the first set against Marian, Maranatha was led by a balanced attack that led the team to a 14-7 lead, forcing Marian to call a timeout. The onslaught continued with the lead increasing to 21-13, and senior middle blocker Lauren Schulz (Lake Mills, WI) closed out a set one, 25-16 win with a kill.
Maranatha held a slim margin at 10-9 in the second set, but kills by Schulz and freshman Alison Renz (Lake Mills, WI) helped the team back up to a 16-11 lead and finally the 25-15 win, and in the third set, the Sabres were down just 20-19 before three straight kills by sophomore hitter Stacy Reinke (Clintonville, WI) helped guide her team to a 25-20 win.
The Crusaders needed just 14 kills from senior middle blocker Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, IL), who finished with 14 while sophomore hitter Kelli Fox (Matthews, N.C.) added 10 kills.
Against MSOE, Maranatha lost 25-19 in the first set, but tied the score at 24-all in the second set on a two straight kills by Peterson. MSOE responded though with two kills of their own to end the set at 26-24 and in the third set, the Raiders eked out a 25-23 win.
Peterson finished with a game high in kills with 15 and a .378 attack percentage.
The Crusaders face North Central on Friday, September 20 at 5:00 p.m. in River Forest, IL.
