LINCOLN, IL – The Maranatha volleyball team returned to top form this weekend with a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Indiana University Northwest, and Region opponent, Lincoln Christian, at the Lincoln Christian Triangular on Saturday.
The Crusaders defeated the Red Hawks in last weekend’s Moody Invitational Tournament by a 3-0 score and continued their dominance with scores of 25-9, 25-12 and 25-15 behind the hitting of senior middle blocker Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, IL), who had 13 kills on a .346 attack percentage while finishing with three blocks (one solo).
As a team, Maranatha compiled a .318 attack percentage, as junior opposite hitter Stacie Ross (Wyoming, MI) finished with seven kills and senior middle blocker Lauren Schulz posted six.
The Maranatha defense was led by sophomore Kelli Fox (Matthews, N.C.), who tallied 18 of the team’s 50 total digs.
Maranatha faced a talented Lincoln Christian team loaded with heavy-hitters, but rose to the occasion, defeating the Red Lions by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-16.
Peterson once again led the Crusaders with 12 kills, and two block assists while also recording 14 digs. Maranatha finished with 59 total digs and were led by sophomore libero Sam Swiatek (Walled Lake, MI), who recorded 17 while three others finished with six apiece.
The offense also saw contributions from Schulz, who had eight kills while freshman opposite hitter Alison Renz (Lake Mills, WI) tacked on seven, and the team, finished with a .302 attack percentage.
Maranatha now holds an impressive 9-0 record in the NCCAAII, with big wins over Lincoln Christian, Northland and Grace University.
The Crusaders look to improve their 14-7 overall record with a win over Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. in Watertown, WI.
The volleyball team asks everyone to wear pink in honor of Mrs. Jane Morrison, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Morrison is wife to head women’s basketball coach, Clayton Morrison.
