CHICAGO, IL – Senior middle blocker Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, IL) and the women’s volleyball team made quick work of three different opponents over Friday and Saturday en route to winning the Moody Invitational Tournament in Chicago, IL, improving to 11-7 on the season.
Maranatha lost just one set in three matches against Indiana University Northwest, Grace Bible and Northland International.
In their first match against Indiana University Northwest on Friday, the Crusaders jumped out to an 18-13 lead that forced a Red Hawk timeout and proceeded to a 25-15 set one win. The Red Hawks countered in the next set with a 10-5 lead that swung back in Maranatha’s favor at 19-17.
The Red Hawks scored the next five points to regain a 21-19 lead and took set two by a score of 25-20. The Red Hawks stood no chance in the third set as the Crusaders had leads of 9-1 and 14-2 before wrapping up the set at 25-13.
In the fourth and final set, Maranatha took another big lead at 10-3 and forced a timeout at 20-10 for Maranatha’s first win of the tournament.
In their second match Friday against Grace, the Crusaders made it look easy with set wins of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-15 for their 10th win of the season to advance to the championship game where they would face rival, Northland International on Saturday afternoon.
Northland was no match for the Crusaders’ attack, forcing timeouts at 14-6 and 20-9 before a set one 25-13 win and in set two, Maranatha carried a 21-12 lead before snagging a 25-20 win.
In the final set that led to Maranatha’s 11th win, and the tournament championship, the Crusaders carried a 6-1 and 16-9 lead before finishing off the Pioneers for the 25-20 win.
Peterson and junior setter Emily Thompson (Watertown, WI) were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Peterson garnering Tournament MVP honors.
Peterson finished the tournament with 44 kills in three matches for a .461 attack percentage, recording 22 kills and six blocks (one solo) against Indiana University Northwest. Thompson finished with 52 assists and 12 digs.
The Crusaders face MSOE on Tuesday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m.
