Crusaders Come Up Short Against Macalester

Box Score

WATERTOWN, WI – The Maranatha football team matched the Macalester Scots in offensive yards, and first downs, but it was Macalester’s efficiency in the red zone that bested the Crusaders on a breezy, overcast Saturday afternoon.

The Scots scored on four out of five trips to the end zone, but Maranatha’s defense held Macalester on three different occasions to force a field goal in the first and second quarters and had 331 total yards of offense compared to Macalester’s 361.

The visitor’s backed the Crusasders up to their own 15-yard line on their first drive before settling on a field goal, but on the Scots’ next drive; freshman linebacker Ryan Reed (Pinedale, WY) notched a sack to force a punt at the Macalester 34-yard line.

Macalester did score their first touchdown on a 27-yard strike and added a field goal late in the second quarter for a 16-0 lead that would hold until halftime.

On the first drive of the third quarter, the Scots had a big gain of 23 yards before the defense, led by junior linebacker Ethan Kennon (Raleigh, N.C.), halted Macalester’s offense at their own 39-yard line.

Macalester would not be denied though, with touchdowns at one minute left in the third quarter and six minutes in the fourth quarter. Maranatha responded to the Scots’ last score though with a five-play, 64-yard drive that culminated in a 24-yard touchdown completion to junior receiver Jordan DeLay (Flint, MI).

De Lay finished the game with 101 yards receiving and a touchdown while McCormick recorded 180 yards passing and a touchdown.

Kennon finished with a team-leading 16 tackles, one for loss, on defense while junior safety Josiah Brendemuehl (Mishicot, WI) notched 12 tackles.

The defense also received sacks from senior linebacker Shane Saxon (Watertown, WI) and Reed while freshman cornerback Clayton Morrison (Jefferson, WI) picked off his third pass of the season.
