WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Crusaders pulled off a 42-28 win over second-place (North Division) Alverno College despite a slew of turnovers and poor first-half shooting on Thursday evening.

Maranatha struggled to score early on, with their first points coming four minutes into the game off a three pointer by senior guard Hallie Sheley (Rockford, Ill.)

The slow start carried but the scoring did not, as both teams shot sub-20% from the field, breaking for halftime with just a 12-9 score in favor of Alverno.

Senior guard Autumn Peotter (Waupaca, Wis.) stole an inbounds pass to begin the second half, and after an exchange of turnovers drove to the basket for a layup to set the tone for the Saders much more efficient second half.

Alverno battled back to a 29-26 deficit with five minutes remaining, but the Crusaders rose to the occasion with a three from Peotter and a pair of free-throws from Sheley for a 38-28 lead with 1:28 remaining. Maranatha hung on for its 10th win while halting Alverno’s six-game winning streak.
The Crusaders can credit their strong second half to a well-executed offensive effort, hitting 52% of their shots in the second half and 75% of their free throws.  Sheley finished with 18 points, as Peotter racked-up 11.

Maranatha hits the road, looking for another win this Saturday against Northern Athletics Conference opponent, Rockford College. Game time is scheduled to begin 2:00 p.m. in Rockford, Ill.
