MILWAUKEE, WI – The women’s volleyball team improved to 12-7 on the season in a rematch against MSOE, defeating the Raiders 3-0 on Tuesday evening at the Kern Center in Milwaukee, WI. The Crusaders were defeated in like fashion on Saturday, September 15th as part of the MSOE Triangular in Milwaukee.
This time around, Maranatha used just enough of a balanced offensive attack to return the favor, with nine kills apiece from sophomore outside hitter Stacy Reinke (Clintonville, WI) and senior middle blocker Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, IL) and eight from freshman opposite hitter Alison Renz (Lake Mills, WI).
In the first set, kills by Peterson, Renz and junior opposite hitter Pam Borchardt (Watertown, WI) gave Maranatha a 7-4 advantage that ballooned to 20-9 on several MSOE errors, but the offense finished with four kills in the final six points, the last coming from Peterson to end the set at 25-14.
The second set wasn’t so easy for Maranatha though, as the Raiders kept within 2-3 points throughout the set, tying it at 16 apiece on three straight points. Kills by Peterson and Borchardt gave the Crusaders breathing room at 19-17, and again at 23-21, but once again, the Raiders rallied to take a 24-23 lead that forced a Maranatha timeout.
The break was what Maranatha needed as a ball handling error by MSOE evened the game at 24-24 and Reinke followed up with a kill to take the lead at 25-24 before the team pulled out a 26-24 win.
The Raiders stayed in striking range in the third set, chipping a 10-6 deficit to trail by just one point. Despite several errors late in the set that drew MSOE back to within 23-19, Maranatha pulled away late thanks to kills by Peterson and Renz, who delivered the game winner for the 25-21 win.
Sophomore Kelli Fox (Matthews, N.C.), starting in place of Sam Swiatek (Walled Lake, MI) at the libero position, posted 15 digs while Borchardt had 18 assists and junior setter Emily Thompson (Watertown, WI) had 14 assists.
