WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Maranatha Crusaders were defeated 7-2 and 8-3 by Finlandia University Friday evening at Washington Park.
Finlandia scored runs in the first and second innings to hold a 2-0 lead before sophomore shortstop Tim Shelp (Independence, Mo.) singled to score Jason Garrison.
Finlandia responded in the next inning with three runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to close the game. Maranatha scoring woes continued with runners on base, stranding seven throughout the game.
Junior pitcher Craig Lawson (Independence, Mo.) pitched seven innings and held Finlandia to two runs in five innings. Lawson struck out seven batters while allowing seven hits.
Garrison finished the game 2-4 from the plate.
Maranatha jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second inning of game two, when Garrison’s double scored sophomore infielder Stephen Bishop (Hampton, Va.).
The lead quickly evaporated with a four-run fourth inning and three-run fifth by Finlandia, who would go on to hold the Crusaders scoreless the rest of the game.
Sophomore pitcher Jeremy Mattson (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) pitched four innings, while allowing five hits and six runs.
Garrison and junior third baseman Garett Ordway (Pensacola, Fla.) each went 2-4, with Garrison recording an RBI.
Maranatha will face Concordia Chicago on Saturday, April 7, 2012 in Watertown.
