WATERTOWN, WI – The women’s basketball team carried a lead through much of the second quarter before the Lakeland Muskies pulled out a 66-45 win on Monday evening.
Maranatha held a six-point lead with just under three minutes remaining in the first half, receiving a strong defensive performance from senior center Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, IL), who had 8 points, 15 rebounds, and 8 blocks in 36 minutes of action.
The Crusaders had gained their first lead of the game, 14-13, on a huge three-pointer by freshman guard Courtney Dunn (Oshkosh, WI), at 11 minutes in the first period and carried a slim lead for much of the half, as senior guard Allison Schulz (Chillicothe, IL) hit a three to bump the lead up to 19-17.
But Lakeland would not be denied, with a run at the end of the half to lead 29-26, as the Muskies hit a late three and a jumper with less than 45 seconds to take the lead.
The Muskies had to deal with a resilient Maranatha squad that nearly pulled even after a jumper by senior guard Erin Steuerwald (Whitewater, WI) that cut Lakeland’s lead to 31-30.
The Muskies hit two consecutive three’s in the next few minutes, in what would lead to Lakeland seizing momentum of the game, at one point holding an 18-point advantage late in the second half.
Maranatha shot just 28% from the field in the second half, and finished the game at 31.5% from the field. The Crusaders fared well at the free-throw line, making eight of their nine shots for an 88.9 percentage.
Dunn finished the game with nine points, four assists and three steals in 35 minutes while Schulz posted 10 points and two steals.
Maranatha faces Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday, in Milwaukee, WI at 7:00 p.m.
