Pill Leads Crusaders To Victory In Closing Minutes

WATERTOWN, Wis. – Maranatha played a competitive spirited affair against Spalding College, winning 3-1 in the closing minutes on Thursday afternoon.

Both team remained scoreless for 38 minutes until junior midfielder Taylor Pill (Watertown, Wis.) notched his third goal of the season at 39 minutes.

Spalding sprung out of the gates with two shots that were turned away by junior goalkeeper Kyle Kutz (Cambridge, Wis.).

Kutz finally gave way though at the 72 minute on a penalty kick to even the score at one apiece to threaten overtime.

The Crusaders didn’t fold under the pressure, pushing the tempo back on Spalding until Pill once again delivered the winner on a wide open shot past the 18 yard line and into the corner of the net.

Maranatha’s Jeremy Knudson (Charlotte, N.C.) posted the third goal of the game after moving past the last defender and goalkeeper and sending the shot into the lower corner of the net.

Kutz (1-0) gathered his first career win in a big way, saving eight shots and allowing only one goal.

Pill finished with two goals with two shots on net.

Maranatha moves on to face Beloit in Beloit, Wis. on Saturday, September 15 at 1:00 p.m.
