MENOMINEE, WI – The baseball team kept pace with the UW-Stout Blue Devils (14-7) on Friday afternoon, posting a 7-3 loss, pushing three runs across home plate in the third inning, while holding the Blue Devil’s offense to a relatively quiet game.
Maranatha suffered an 11-0 loss in game one, but came out in game two, with three hits in the third inning, responding to a five-run barrage the Blue Devil’s threw Maranatha’s way.
Freshman infielder Caleb Prigge (Watertown, WI) had his first single of game two, and reached home on a Cody Borland (Oakley, CA) double, that scored Prigge, and freshman catcher Jacob Vossen (Toledo, OH). Borland also scored on one of Tim Roger’s (Willmar, MN) two base hits in the game, and Maranatha chopped UW-Stout’s lead to 5-3, entering the bottom of the third.
Twice over the next two innings, Maranatha put runners in scoring position, advancing senior Galen Balinski (Mountainhome, PA) to second base in the fourth, on a single by Ethan Hokanson (Abilene, KS).
Maranatha followed up with two singles from Rogers, and Prigge, in their first three at-bats in the fifth, but on a single by junior Caleb Rost (Greenville, S.C.), the Blue Devil’s left fielder threw Prigge out at third to end the inning.
UW-Stout tacked on their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth, on a single that drove in two runs, and Maranatha’s Adam Courtney (Guthrie Center, IA), who pitched six solid innings, allowing 10 hits, and seven runs, while striking out three batters, took the loss.
Prigge finished the day 4-6 form the plate in the leadoff spot, and Rogers went 2-3, while Borland finished 1-3 with two RBI’s.
Burdett pitched six innings in game one, striking out one batter, while holding UW-Stout scoreless for three innings.
Maranatha faces Concordia University Wisconsin, on Thursday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m., in Mequon, WI.
