MILWAUKEE, WI – It took only 45 minutes for the women’s volleyball team to defeat the Mount Mary Blue Angels, handing the host team lopsided losses of 25-5, 25-10 and 25-18 on Tuesday evening, while receiving strong play from the bench, to improve to 19-8 on the season.
Starters Lauren Schulz (Lake Mills, WI) and Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, IL) contributed their usual strong play with nine and eight kills respectively while freshman Alison Renz (Lake Mills, WI) tallied nine, but perhaps the biggest spark came off the bench, as junior hitter Kaylah Richerson (Elmwood, IL) had eight kills on a .438 attack percentage to help the team, comprised of four reserves at one point, secure a third-set win.
Maranatha dominated set one behind kills from Schulz and Peterson, that gave Maranatha a 9-1 lead to force a Mount Mary timeout, but a minute later, the Crusaders were at it again, building a 17-2 lead at one point before running away with a 20-point margin win.
Mount Mary found no answer for the relentless attack in set two, falling behind 10-2 on a kill from senior hitter Erin Steuerwald (Whitewater, WI), who finished with four on the night.
Renz bumped the lead up to 16-5 on three straight kills, and with the score 24-10, Richerson delivered the game-winning point on a kill, assisted by junior setter Emily Thompson (Watertown, WI), and in the third set, Richerson continued her assault with four kills to vault her team to a 15-3 lead.
Mount Mary mounted a comeback in the form of a 11-2 run that cut the deficit to 17-14, and later, 20-15, but Schulz recorded four pivotal kills down the stretch and Richerson once again ended the set at 25-8.
As a team, Maranatha recorded a .387 attack percentage and held a 44-18 advantage in kills while committing just eight attack errors. Thompson was a key reason for the team’s success on offense, racking up 20 assists while chipping in three service aces.
Schulz finished with three block assists on defense while sophomore libero Sam Swiatek (Walled Lake, MI) posted 15 digs.
The Crusaders return to the court for a rematch against Finlandia, this time in Handcock, MI, on Saturday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. EST. Maranatha handily defeated the Lions by a score of 3-0 on Saturday, October 19.
