‘Saders Face Stiff Competition In NAC Opener

LISLE, Ill. – Several weeks removed since their last action, the baseball team finally opened Northern Athletics Conference play with a doubleheader loss to Benedictine by scores of 14-0, and 18-0 on Friday afternoon.

The team, originally scheduled to play last Thursday, was forced to move Friday’s game against Benedictine to Lisle, Ill. where they faced the #1 team in the conference.

In their first game, the Eagles scored nine runs off eight hits and would score again in the fourth and sixth innings.

Maranatha managed just two hits in the game—one apiece for senior third baseman Garett Ordway (Pensacola, Fla.) and freshman shortstop Tim Rogers (Willmar, Minn.).

Senior pitcher Derek Funkhouser (Paris, Ill.) pitched six innings, and dropped to 1-1 on the season.

The Eagles improved to 5-1 in game two after using a 19-hit outburst, seven coming in the fourth inning to drop Maranatha to 2-5 overall.

Sophomore center fielder Cody Borland (Oakley, Ca.) singled up the middle then advanced as far as third in the second inning before being stranded.

The team received hits from Ordway, senior pitcher Tim Shelp (Independence, Mo.) and three others in the loss.

Shelp dropped to 1-2 on the season, allowing 12 hits and eight earned runs while striking out one.

The team moves on to River Forest, Ill. on Saturday to face Concordia Chicago beginning at 12:00 p.m.
