Ankeny, IA — The inaugural season for the Maranatha Baptist University Sabercats opened up with a pair of wins from the volleyball team, who breezed through AIB College of Business, and Faith Baptist Bible College, 3-0 on Friday, at the Spikefest Tournament in Ankeny, Iowa.
Maranatha eked out a 25-23 win in set one against AIB, and won the next two sets 25-20, and 25-15.
In her second season, sophomore hitter Alison Renz (Lake Mills, WI) recorded eight kills while senior setter Emily Thompson (Watertown, WI) chipped in 12 assists.
Juniors Kelli Fox (Matthews, N.C.) and Samantha Swiatek (Walled Lake, MI) finished with 10 and 15 digs respectively.
The Sabercats continued their undefeated start with a 25-12 set one win over North Central University, pulling away in the middle of the set with a 19-8 lead, and finishing off the Rams on a 6-0 run.
Maranatha put the finishing touches on the match with a lopsided 25-8 third-set win, after claiming impressive leads of 11-1 and 19-1.
On Saturday, the team breezed through Ozark Christian College 25-20, 25-15, and 25-9, receiving 10 kills from Alison Renz, and seven from Stacy Reinke, putting them into the championship game against Manhattan Christian College.
Manhattan succumbed to Maranatha, 25-11 in the first set, and fell 25-19 in the last two sets, as Maranatha never lost a set en route to the Spikfest Tournament Title. Renz finished the game with 12 kills, while Thompson had 19 assists, and Pam Borchardt (Watertown, WI) finished with 15 assists.
Renz and Swiatek were later named to the All-Tournament Team.
