Wrestling Team Opens Season Against Trojans

WATERTOWN, WI – The wrestling team kicked off the 2013-14 season with a dual against the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans, who pulled out a 41-12 win, on Friday afternoon.

In the 149 weight-class, junior wrestler Ricky Warren (Watertown, WI) posted two points on a reversal, in the second period of a decision win for Trojan wrestler, Tyler Sonnabend.

Sonnabend, after starting the second period on the bottom position, posted a takedown and two near-fall points before defeating Warren, 5-0.
In the 184 weight class, junior wrestler Jesse Gjefle (Ontario, WI), took a forfeit win, his first of the season, and followed up with an exhibition match against Robert Simmons.

Against Simmons, Gjefle shot out of the gates with a takedown in the opening seconds, for a 2-0 lead, but would watch his opponent score on an escape, followed up by a takedown, for a slim 3-2 lead in favor of Simmons.

Simmons started the second set in the bottom position, and on two occasions, scored reversal points before pinning Gjefle with 38 seconds left in the second period.

In their first matches of the season, Jeremy McPhillips (Georgetown, IL) and John Walton (Fayetteville, N.C.) were pinned in the first period of their respective matches.

Zachary Zimmerman (Trevor, WI) posted a forfeit win in the 141 weight-class and took his opponent to the second period before suffering an 8-0 loss by fall.

The Crusaders have a short turnaround before their next meet, an invitational hosted by MSOE, on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
