12-25-2017 Pastor Charles Welner Charles E. Welner, visitation pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church, died Dec. 25. He was 82. Charles spent much of his career as a teacher and football coach. After earning a bachelor’s degree in education in 1958, he taught math and coached in public schools in Maine and Massachusetts for 16 years and at Dublin (New Hampshire) Christian Academy for three years. Then in 1977, the president of Maranatha Baptist University asked him to start a football program at Maranatha Baptist Academy, the high school affiliated with the university, and teach math in the academy and college. In 1979 he became the athletic director and head football coach while continuing to teach math, in addition to other subjects, at the college. After serving at Maranatha Baptist University for 11 years, he became the school administrator at Emmanuel Christian School, Newington, Connecticut; Falls Baptist Academy, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin; and Trinity Baptist School, Williston, Vermont. He retired in 2007 but continued to serve at Trinity Baptist Church in visitation and ministry to seniors. He moved to Maranatha Village in Sebring, Florida, in 2013 and became the visitation pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, whom he married on New Year’s Day in 1955; three children, Beverly Ehr, Karen Kappenman, and Randall; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

8-11-2017 Pastor James Arlin Barrick (’71) In the early morning hours of August 11th, Pastor James Barrick was called home to meet his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jim was born on February 9, 1948 in Craig, Colorado. It was during his teenage years that he accepted Christ as his personal Savior. In 1966, he attended Pillsbury Bible College and then went on to Maranatha Baptist Bible College where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Bible Theology in 1971. During that time, he married his college sweetheart and wife of 50 years, Rhoda, in 1968. He served as head pastor at Rocky Mountain Baptist Church in Ennis, Montana for one year. Then became the associate pastor for Memorial Baptist Church and the Administrator of Rockford Baptist Schools in Rockford, Illinois from 1972 – 1989. While serving there, he was ordained to the ministry in 1979. In 1989 he moved his family to Cody, Wyoming to become the pastor of First Baptist Church and served faithfully until the present. In 2016 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Mountain States Baptist College of Great Falls, Montana. He will be remembered for his selfless service and devotion to youth Bible Camps, Christian education, teaching young people, coaching various youth sports, shepherding his church family, and loving and caring for his wife, children, and grandchildren. Preceding him in death is his grandson, Andrew. He leaves behind his wife Rhoda, four children and their spouses, fourteen grandchildren, a brother, and two sisters.

5-27-2017 Pastor William Raymond Silver Pastor William Raymond Silver, 87, went to meet his Lord and Savior Saturday, May 27, 2017. He was born on January 14, 1930, the son of William ‘Bud’ and Emma {Williams} Silver. He was united in marriage to his “beautiful wife”, Joan, on August 19, 1951. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage. She will miss him dearly. Pastor Silver was a graduate of Bob Jones University, and received an honorary doctorate from Maranatha Baptist University. He was the Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Georgetown for 40 years. He was a loving son and brother, beloved husband and father, adored grandfather and great grandfather. Pastor Silver was counselor and shepherd to many, soul winner, church planter, and defender of the faith. His gentleness, kindness, and humor were rare and endearing. The Silver Family, Bethel Congregation, and all who knew him will miss his sweet presence and Christ-like spirit. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given in Pastor Silver’s name to Camp Assurance, PO Box 18, Georgetown, IL.

3-7-2017 Jessica Jester (’12) Jessica E. Jester: 29 years old, lifelong resident of Salem, WI passed away Tuesday March 7, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. She was born December 9, 1987 in Burlington, WI the daughter of Jerald and Jane (Williams) Jester. Jessica attended Pillsbury Baptist Bible College, Owatonna, MN, and graduated with a degree in secondary education from Maranatha Baptist University, Watertown, WI. Before her illness, Jessica had worked for five years at Shepherds Ministries, Union Grove, WI as a Living Skills Coach/Aide. Jessica was a member of a Hand Bells group at Pillsbury College, the Drama Department at Maranatha University, the Community Baptist Church, Silver Lake, WI (where she led bible clubs, taught Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School), and was a talented artist and crafter. Survivors include: her parents: Jerald and Jane of Salem, WI; two brothers: James (Michelle) Jester of Franksville, WI and John Jester of Greenfield, WI; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. 1-26-2017 Martin Counterman (‘80) Martin Lester Counterman, Jr., 57, of Port Charlotte, FL passed away January 28, 2017. Martin was a Lt for the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in the Dispatch Dept. and then worked as a deaf interpreter/instructor at Charlotte High School. He worked as a Communications Officer at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport before retiring. Martin was a children’s Pastor at Liberty Community Church and volunteered for the Red Cross. Martin enjoyed fishing, reading, working with children and will be remembered as a family man. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 35 years, Sherri; mother, Geraldine Counterman; son, Aaron Counterman; brothers, David and Rick; brother-in-law, Jon (Debbi) Whiteley and nephew, Josiah Whiteley.

1-18-2017 David Oestreich (’98) David W. Oestreich, 46, of Findlay, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017, at Blanchard Valley Hospital. He was born on Oct. 3, 1970, in Watertown, Wisconsin, to Herman W. and Mary K. (Wilder) Oestreich. His mother survives in Watertown. He married Angela K. Miller on Aug. 27, 1994, and she survives. Other survivors include sons, Winfield and Joseph of Findlay; daughter, Eleanor of Findlay; brothers, Joel (Chris) of Hartland, Wisconsin, Brian (Christy) of Watertown and Adam of Juneau, Wisconsin; sister, Laura (Victor) Gomez of Watertown; and father- and mother-in-law, Ronald and Linda Miller of Findlay. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Maranatha Baptist University and was the production manager at Garsite LLC in Findlay. He was a wonderful husband and father and a published poet. He enjoyed fly fishing, herpetology, photography, cooking and was an accomplished musician.

3-29-2018 Rhoda (’85) Skerrye After teaching almost 30 years as an elementary teacher, God has moved Rhoda to a new school. She is now teaching 7-12 grades at Illinois Central Christian School. Rhoda praises the Lord for His leading!

3-27-2018 Mark (’11) and Andrea (Jochum, ’12) Zockoll Andrea is in the final graded course in the sequencing of her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree (DNP) through the Wilmington University. This summer and fall, to complete her degree, she will run a weight loss clinic, including patient visits and group visits. She will walk in December of 2018, Lord willing.
Mark Zockoll, class of 2011, successfully defended his dissertation entitled “We’re Missing Someone: A Qualitative Study of Black Leadership in Maryland Church Schools” on March 14th at the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore. He will receive his Ed.D. on May 25th. On May 26th he will officially pass on the duties of administrator of Faith Baptist School in Salisbury, MD to Mr. Matthew George (B.S. in from MBU in 2010 and M.A. in 2014) during the FBS Senior graduation ceremony. Mark Zockoll plans on pursuing an administrative role in higher education.

3-5-2018 Pastor Daniel (’13) Lentz In November 2017, Daniel accepted the call to minister as Assistant Pastor at his home church, Calvary Baptist Church in Sauk City, WI. He teaches the Sunday morning Teen Bible Study, leads the congregational singing and choir, and preaches every month. He and his wife, Heidi, and are asking God to do great things in the congregation and in the Sauk Prairie area!

2-12-2018 Pastor Gregory (’83) Stine Greg recently accepted the call to pastor the Lakeside Baptist Church of Backus, Minnesota.

1-23-2018 Jesse (’01) Loggans Jesse became the senior pastor of The Baptist Church of Hadley, Michigan on January 1, 2018. He had been the assistant pastor for almost 10 years.

10-17-2017 Roland (’89) Rancourt Health issues have led to Roland’s retirement after 25 years of teaching grades 4-6. He is now a substitute teacher at Emmanuel Christian Academy.

8-14-2017 Pastor Billy (’15) and Grace (Williquette, ’14) Peters Billy began his role as Associate Pastor at Wausau Bible Church in August 2016. We added a son, Michael Joseph, to our family on December 6, 2016. We just bought and renovated our first house on May 27, 2017.

7-24-2017 Pastor Randy (’91) and Sarah (Berlin’89) Arbogast Randy and Sarah moved to Jefferson, Wisconsin as Randy accepted the call as senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church on June 18th. The move brings Pastor Randy close to home as he grew up in nearby Watertown. “While it’s always heart-wrenching to leave friends and family we are thrilled to the ministry to which he has called us. Jefferson is a place that needs the gospel and we are humbled to be chosen to lead this ministry.”

7-17-2017 Dr. Jose (’86) Torres Dr. Torres graduated with a Ph.D. in May 2017, and he started a Spanish Baptist Seminary online in 2016.

5-31-2017 Mike (’96) Carlson Mike Carlson graduated with a Master of Ministry degree from Clarks Summit University and has accepted the senior pastor position at Germantown Hills Baptist Church, Germantown Hills, IL. The new ministry began May 28, 2017, and there will be an installation service on June 11. Looking forward to what God has in store for us as we serve the Savior at GHBC!

Prayer Requests

6-13-2018 Clayton (’88) and Jane Morrison III We have met with the doctors this afternoon. All have agreed that Jane has lost her fight with cancer. We sorrow with heavy hearts as the end for her is close. Soon Jane will see our Savior face to face. She is being given comfort care to the end. Please lift up the family in prayer. His grace is our sufficiency.

2-4-2018 Pastor Larry (’85) Simon Their church parsonage burnt down on December 29th. Praise the Lord Larry’s wife, Cristy Simon (Cobb) and their handicapped son, Jeremiah are safe. Jeremiah was in the hospital for 5 days with smoke inhalation, but he is fine now. Pray for the ability to rebuild the house. It will cost about $100,000 to rebuild and the insurance only paid $30,000.

6-19-2017 Donna (Wagner, ’77) Hibbs Please be in prayer for my brother Don (’83) Wagner and his family. His brother in law, Paris Wallace, has been missing since last Wednesday and the family believes that his earthly body has been recovered in New Mexico. Click here for more information.
