Kieckhafer Presents Insightful Workshop

How can a Christian teach music in a public school? What opportunities do music students need to capitalize on to prepare for life after college? Adam Kieckhafer answered these questions and more in his music workshop, “More than the Music – Helpful Hints to Guide your Music Program.”

A 2007 graduate of MBU, Kieckhafer is currently the band director at Slinger High School in Slinger, Wisconsin. Although he has had to navigate several challenges working as a Christian in a public system, he has managed to earn the respect of his district and maintain his Christian testimony.

Kieckhafer recounted his experiences implementing marching bands, learning jazz music, budgeting school funds, and building personal relationships. He also spoke about his personal college experience and his learning curve post-graduation.

One thing Kieckhafer stressed more than any other was the importance of social interactions. Connecting with students, parents, and administration opens the door for a better program. Additionally, building friendships can help make an impact for Christ.

What did Maranatha music students take away from the event? Laura Blumer said, “Through music, we gain lasting friendships with others and can be examples for Christ.” Emily Kindstedt also noted, “If you don’t have those relationships built, they won’t learn as much because they are not comfortable in the environment enough to learn. Classroom management is most effective when the teacher-student relationship is healthy.”
