Montgomery 2021 Commencement Contest

Montgomery Wins the 2021 Commencement Contest

The Maranatha Baptist University Music Department is pleased to announce Joel Montgomery as the overall winner of the 2021 Commencement Contest. Montgomery is a sophomore Music Major with concentrations in Arranging and Trumpet Performance from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Playing Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Concerto in E flat Major: Allegro for trumpet, Montgomery received praise from Jeremiah Willson, who adjudicated the initial contest in February, “Joel prepared fantastically and achieved excellent note accuracy!”

Montgomery’s win is a result of the runoffs held last week in which the winners from each initial category (piano, instrumental, and voice) performed before the faculty who then determined the overall winner. Dr. David Brown comments, “Joel is an incredibly hardworking musician with a thirst for more knowledge about brass instruments. His self-discipline and curiousness to learn helped prepare him for success in this competition.”

High regards to the other competitors are offered for their excellent work and achievements—Jonathan Andrews, Jaren Fair, and Emily Kindstedt.

As overall winner Montgomery is awarded a prize of $100 cash, and his name will be engraved on a perpetual plaque.
