Shawn Spencer, New Faculty in Department of Applied Science

Mr. Shawn Spencer will be joining the Applied Science faculty as a chemistry professor in the fall of 2022 at Maranatha Baptist University (MBU). He and his wife, Marla, have four children: Miriam, Morgan, Seth, and Paul. They currently live in Caldwell, West Virginia.

Spencer holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from West Virginia University Institute of Technology and is currently completing an M.S. in Chemistry. In addition, he has earned an M.Div. from Summit University of Pennsylvania and an M.A. in Biblical Counseling from Maranatha Baptist Seminary.

He served in the Army Reserves, working with signal support systems and nuclear-biological-chemical detection systems and he also has experience as a chemical engineer. Besides his work as an engineer, Spencer has followed the Lord’s leading and served as a pastor, associate pastor, and biblical counselor. Most recently, Spencer served as a pastor at Central Baptist Church in Athens, Texas.

Spencer is looking forward to joining the ministry of Maranatha. When applying for this faculty position, he said, “I would love to serve the Lord by training men to serve the Lord, whether in the church or in the workplace.”

Dr. Lane Hansel, chair of the Department of Applied Science, anticipates Spencer’s joining the department: “Shawn brings extensive knowledge and real-life application of chemistry to the classroom from his years of work experience in the field. He is eager to help our students succeed both in and out of the classroom as he prepares them for their next steps. We are excited to see how God will use him on campus and in our department.”

Spencer will be assuming his responsibilities in the fall of 2022.
