2021 Concerto Competition

Announcing the 2021 Concerto Competition Winners

Maranatha Baptist University offers musicians a variety of opportunities to compete and showcase their musical talents. On Tuesday, students competed in MBU’s annual Concerto Competition, an event open to all instrumentalists, pianists, and vocalists.

Winner

Maranatha Baptist University’s Music Department announces Allison Morken as the 2021 Concerto Competition Winner. Accompanied by Miss Emily Kindstedt, Morken performed the Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, II. Romance by W.A. Mozart. Adjudicator, Carl Rasmussen, remarked, “Allison couldn’t have played Mozart better.” Allie will be awarded a $100 cash prize and the opportunity to perform her piece during the spring band and orchestra concert.

 

Runner Up

Congratulations to Joel Montgomery, the runner up of this year’s competition who will receive a $25 cash prize. Montgomery played Oskar Böhme’s Trumpet Concerto, Op. 18, III. Allegretto and was accompanied by Miss Hope Ostrander.

 

Adjudicator—Mr. Carl Rasmussen

A resident of Watertown, WI, for nearly nine years, Mr. Carl Rasmussen enjoys a strong connection to Maranatha Baptist University. With a BME degree from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania and a Masters in saxophone performance from Baylor University, Mr. Rasmussen has taught at MBU’s Music and Drama Camp and has appeared as a soloist in a few of Maranatha’s band and orchestra concerts. Although he has taught privately and in the public-school setting, Mr. Rasmussen has made instrumental repair his life-long, full-time occupation as he has for over twenty-five years. Currently, he is the repair technician for Heid Music in Madison, WI.

Regarding the performances, Rasmussen commented, “Both of them are wonderful musicians who displayed excellent command of their instruments. What a wonderful treat to listen to!”
