“Making a Difference While Making a Living” | Leadership Breakfast 02.17.2022

On Thursday, February 17, 2022, community members, Maranatha faculty, staff, and students converged in the Maranatha Dining Complex to hear David Binder, Vice President at MLG Capital, present on impact giving. Specifically, his presentation was titled, “Making a Difference While Making a Living.”

MLG Capital is a real estate investment company in Brookfield, Wisconsin, that strives to have a MAD culture, according to Binder. MAD stands for “Making a Difference.”

Binder asked the audience if they were MAD – were they making a difference in:

  • Personal and professional growth?
  • Serving a greater good?
  • The life they’ve been given?
  • Working together with sympathy and empathy?
  • Taking risks and supporting others “in the weeds”?

The solution that Binder offered if the audience wasn’t making a difference was the MLG MAD Initiative. This initiative is anchored in “an empowered and empathetic staff” according to Binder.

This is how it works: an investor makes the decision to invest in MLG via the MAD initiative. The fund investors can choose a charitable organization partner, then:

  • The investor donates all of their returns in excess of 6%
  • MLG Capital donates 100% of their profit to that charitable organization

For every 1 million of donor investment, $555,000 is given to the charitable organization.

MLG Capital looks for three core attributes in their charitable organizations: education-centric, faith-based, and active employee and investor engagement. A few of their charitable organizations include:

  • Life Song
  • Secure Futures
  • Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy
  • Milwaukee College Prep
  • Augustine Prep Academy
  • St. Marcus School

Binder ended his presentation by encouraging the attendees to “be MAD”.
