The Business Major | Letter to My Freshman Self

Hey Freshman Zeke,

I understand you are looking forward to your next four years of college. Let me take some time and encourage you as you start this next chapter in your life.

It is important to remember what brought you to MBU. All your immediate and several of your extended family members have attended MBU and have received quality educations. MBU will provide you a quality education based upon Biblical principles. I hear you are interested in business but are not sure which of the several business degrees that MBU offers to pursue. I highly recommend the School of Business at MBU. The professors’ business experience is evident through the knowledge they pass on to their students. They also care for you as a person and want to see you become successful in school and your future career. I highly recommend starting off in Business Management because it will allow you to test the waters in other majors like Accounting, Marketing, Sports Management, etc. to see if you want to study in a more specialized business major.

The road ahead is not going to be easy. Challenges will arise but use these challenges to learn and grow. There will be several classes that will make you wonder if you will make it through college. But just remind yourself that God led you to MBU, and He will help you through your journey. One strategy to remember is to not overwhelm yourself on syllabus day by looking at all the assignments that need to be completed before the semester ends. Rather systematically take it one week at a time. Do not focus on the staircase, focus on each step and you will find yourself at the top by the end.

You are here for an education and that is important to remember, but also take time to make friends and have fun. Get involved with extracurricular activities. In the classroom is where you gain practical knowledge, and in extracurriculars is where you can apply and practice that knowledge. MBU provides several extracurricular activities such as band, choirs, SBC, intermural and intercollegiate sports, and much more. I encourage you to get involved on a sports team because it will be your teammates that turn into your closest friends. Your teammates and coaches will push you to be a better athlete on the field or court and a better Christian.

At the end of your college career, you will miss MBU and all the fun you had with friends, teammates, coaches, and professors. However, you will be prepared for your next chapter in life because of your experiences at MBU.
